Activity Overview

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder without specific structural abnormalities or lab tests, leading to patient and clinician barriers to diagnosis and effective treatment. During this Medical Crossfire®, expert faculty will engage in a multidisciplinary roundtable moderated by a family physician and including a gastroenterologist, a physician assistant, and a patient with IBS to discuss how to increase confidence in diagnosing IBS and individualizing IBS management. This videotaped expert panel discussion covers topics including categorization of IBS by disease severity and symptoms, impact on quality of life, the biopsychosocial model of IBS and treatment approaches with both current and new and emerging therapies. Faculty will emphasize the value of effective communication between gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, specialty nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and patients in a patient-centered approach.

Intended Audience

The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of gastroenterologists, general practitioners, OB/GYNs, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of IBS patients.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify the key symptoms and diagnostic criteria to confidently diagnose IBS without unnecessary testing
  • Describe the key features of mild, moderate, and severe IBS
  • Describe the dietary modifications and medications used for IBS-D and IBS-C symptoms according to their actions and recent clinical trial data to implement an effective individualized treatment plan
  • Outline a plan for regular communications with patients utilizing the skills associated with building trust and increasing patient participation in their care
  • Describe a multidisciplinary approach to ensure continuity of care that leverages the complementary expertise of all health professionals involved in care of patients with IBS
